About Islamic Calendar (Hijri) 2025

The Islamic Calendar, also known as the Hijri Calendar, is a lunar calendar consisting of 12 months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used by over 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide to determine the proper days of Islamic holidays and rituals, such as the annual period of fasting during Ramadan and the proper time for the pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj).

Unlike the Gregorian calendar which follows the solar cycle, the Hijri calendar follows the moon's phases. This means Islamic months begin when the new moon is sighted. As a result, the Islamic year is approximately 11 days shorter than the solar year, causing Islamic events to shift earlier each year.

Significance of Hijri Months

The calendar began in 622 AD, marking the Hijrah (migration) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Makkah to Madinah. The 12 months of the Islamic Calendar are:

Muharram: One of the four sacred months; start of the Islamic New Year. Safar: The second month of the lunar year. Rabi' al-Awwal: The birth month of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Rabi' al-Thani & Jumada al-Awwal & Jumada al-Thani: Months leading up to the sacred period. Rajab: A sacred month, often associated with Al-Isra' wal-Mi'raj. Sha'ban: The month immediately preceding Ramadan. Ramadan: The holiest month of fasting, Quran recitation, and reflection. Shawwal: Marks the end of fasting with Eid-ul-Fitr. Dhul-Qa'dah: A sacred month where fighting is traditionally forbidden. Dhul-Hijjah: The month of Hajj and Eid-ul-Adha.

When does the Islamic day start?
In the Islamic calendar, a new day begins at sunset (Maghrib), not at midnight as in the Gregorian calendar.
What are the White Days (Ayyam al-Beed)?
The "White Days" are the 13th, 14th, and 15th of every lunar Islamic month. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) highly recommended fasting on these days as a voluntary act of worship.
Is the calendar on Salah Portal accurate?
Our calendar uses precise astronomical calculations (Umm al-Qura/Global sighting criteria). However, actual dates for events like Eid may vary by 1 day depending on local moon sightings in your country.
What are the four sacred months in Islam?
The four sacred months (Al-Ashhur Al-Hurum) are Muharram, Rajab, Dhul-Qa'dah, and Dhul-Hijjah. Warfare is traditionally forbidden during these months.
How many days are in an Islamic year?
An Islamic lunar year has approximately 354 or 355 days, which is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian solar year.
Can I use this calendar for Ramadan planning?
Yes, the calendar provides estimated dates for Ramadan start and end, which is excellent for planning. Always confirm with your local mosque for the exact start date based on moon sighting.
