History of Karbala
The tragedy of Karbala took place on the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH. Imam Hussain (RA), the beloved grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the son of Hazrat Ali (RA) and Syeda Fatima (RA), stood against the tyrant ruler Yazid. Along with his Ahl al-Bayt (family members) and 72 faithful companions, he chose martyrdom over bowing to injustice.
The sacrifices of the Ahl al-Bayt were immense. Imam Hussain's brother, Hazrat Abbas (AS), gave his life trying to bring water for the thirsty children. His young son, Ali Akbar (AS), who resembled the Prophet (PBUH), and his six-month-old infant, Ali Asghar (AS), were also martyred. The women of the household, led by Syeda Zainab (RA), faced captivity with unmatched patience and courage, carrying the message of Karbala to the world.
Virtues of Fasting (Roza)
Fasting on the day of Ashura (10th Muharram) is highly recommended. The Prophet (PBUH) used to fast on this day even before the command of Ramadan. He also advised fasting on the 9th or 11th along with the 10th to differentiate from other traditions.
Recommended Worship (Ibadat)
On this day, engage in excessive Durood Sharif, Istighfar, and recitation of the Quran. Giving charity (Sadaqah) and providing water to the thirsty is considered a highly virtuous act in memory of the martyrs of Karbala.
