Observance in Port Said
Ashura in Port Said is a time of reflection and prayer. The day reminds the residents of Port Said of the ultimate sacrifice made by Imam Hussain (RA) and his family. The streets often see stalls distributing water and juice (Sabeel) to honor the thirst of the martyrs of Karbala, remembering especially the young children of the Ahl al-Bayt who suffered in the heat of the desert.
Fasting in Port Said
A large number of Muslims in Port Said observe the fast of Ashura. It is recommended to fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram. Families wake up for Suhoor and break their fast with simple Iftar, remembering the hunger and thirst faced in Karbala by the Prophet's family.
