Shab-e-Meraj: The Night of Ascension

"Glory to Him who took His Servant by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa..." (Quran 17:1)

History of Isra & Mi'raj

On the 27th night of Rajab, Allah Almighty invited Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the Heavens. This journey has two parts: Al-Isra (the journey from Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah to Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem on the Buraq) and Al-Mi'raj (the ascension from Jerusalem to the Seven Heavens). There, the Prophet (PBUH) led all previous Prophets in prayer and then ascended to meet Allah at Sidrat al-Muntaha.

The Gift of Salah

The most significant gift received on this night was the five daily prayers (Salah). Initially, 50 prayers were ordained, but through the mercy of Allah and the advice of Prophet Musa (AS), they were reduced to 5, with the reward of 50. Salah is the spiritual ascension (Mi'raj) for every believer.

Recommended Worship (Ibadat)

Muslims spend this night in special worship. It is traditional to offer 12 Rakats Nawafil (in sets of 2 or 4). After the prayer, one should recite SubhanAllah, Istighfar, and Durood Sharif abundantly. Fasting on the following day (27th Rajab) is also highly meritorious.
